In Mark Wilcox's "Lonely Poplar," the slender, dark silhouette of a solitary tree stands in quiet defiance against a backdrop of sweeping violet and rose colored clouds.

About the Artist

Mark Wilcox

Mark Wilcox, a native of Northern California, was inspired by Golden Age book illustrators before detouring from art school for an English degree. He spent seven years in Kyoto, Japan, where he developed a love for the minimalist aesthetic and contributed illustrations to local magazines. After returning to California, he worked in music technology before taking up oil painting, where his current approach uses translucent glazes to emphasize simplicity, luminosity, and the mood of the California landscape.
